Building the Nation through Scientific Aid: The Northwest China Cattle Plague of 1942

This article examines a 1942 outbreak of cattle plague (rinderpest) that decimated livestock of nomadic communities in the Qinghai Lake region. The national government sent considerable resources, including veterinarians and vaccines, to combat the plague while mired in war with Japan. Drawing on Chinese and Tibetan-language sources, I argue that this disaster was a critical opportunity for the national and provincial governments to bolster their administration of the region.
